That is a direct measurement of what the instrument is for: it is the easiest instrument in the world to get five thousand strangers playing at once.

Records aside: the most important ukulele record is the one you set yourself — the first song you learn, the first chord you switch cleanly, the first time you play for someone else. Every ukulele player is a record holder in their own way.
Mass-ensemble records are limited by logistics rather than by skill. To be counted, every participant must be playing, in the same piece, for a set minimum duration, with stewards able to verify it. That is why the record has changed hands between festival organisers and school districts rather than between musicians: it is fundamentally a crowd-management achievement, and the ukulele qualifies because a one-finger chord makes everybody in the crowd eligible.
Speed records are the opposite and should be read with more caution. Notes per minute depends heavily on what counts as a note and on the tremolo technique permitted, so comparing two speed claims from different adjudications is rarely meaningful. It is a genuine feat of physical control; it is not a like-for-like league table.
